Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
