Trump Calls for Jailing of Chicago Mayor and Illinois Governor as Military Forces Arrive in Metropolis

Ex-President Donald Trump on midweek demanded the detainment of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, alleging them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader should be jailed for endangering ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on his platform Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic party.

Trump's statements come alongside the arrival of state military personnel in the Windy City area under orders from the federal administration, notwithstanding strong objections from state officials such as the governor and mayor.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump attempted to have a Black man wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on that day. "I'm not going put."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, stating: "I will not back down. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What remains on the road toward complete autocracy?"

As of midweek, military units from Texas had reached the Elwood training facility, a military installation roughly 50 miles from the city, as the administration pushes forward with its aggressive crime strategy and mass deportation efforts.

Trump has labeled Chicago a "crime-ridden disaster zone", even though official statistics indicate notable reductions in most criminal activities, including murders.

That day, two hundred Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the region, with an additional three hundred state military personnel preparing to mobilize, according to reports. Officials reportedly stated the soldiers would avoid police functions but would protect ICE officers and government buildings.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with Texas national guard insignia were spotted at the military facility in the town. Vehicles marked "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered sanitation facilities and other supplies. Mobile units were set up in rows. Extra barriers was installed around the compound.

The Federal Aviation Administration imposed no-fly zones over the military base for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has intensified immigration enforcement in Chicago in recent weeks, sparking protests, particularly near an processing facility in Broadview.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit targeting the federal government, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they describe as "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on the city and state, labeling it "illegal and risky".

A court hearing on their lawsuit is scheduled for Thursday.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on Monday banning ICE officers and others from using municipal facilities as staging areas for enforcement actions.

Pritzker has charged Trump of using troops as "staged tools" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on the previous day, he said that the president is attempting to "justify and normalize the presence of military personnel under his personal authority."

The nearly 150-year-old federal law limits the military's role in enforcing domestic laws. However, Trump has stated he would be prepared to activate the emergency powers, which permits a president to send active duty military in regions that are failing to suppress an insurrection or are defying national authority.

Since starting his second term, Trump has dispatched or discussed deploying military units to at least 10 urban centers, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, claiming that the armed forces is essential to fight violence and defend immigration agents.

Statistics indicates that serious offenses nationwide has decreased in recent years. In the city, for instance, murders were down 31% to under three hundred through late summer, according to police data.

A recent poll published on that day found that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the sending of military forces without an external threat.
