Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
