Users Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
